The Benefits of Organic Herb Farming
![]() |
You've probably seen a wide variety of organic products in stores lately. You can find organic fruits, vegetables, meat, milk, eggs and of course, herbs. Organic herb farming is growing in popularity as farmers and consumers learn more about the benefits of organics and the drawbacks of growing and buying non-organic products. One of the most potentially dangerous drawbacks is the use of toxic pesticides and fertilizers. While this is especially true for products that will be consumed, it is even true for cotton that is worn. Herbs are used in a variety of different ways and may be consumed or used topically. For example, some herbs are used for cooking and some are used to make soaps and lotions.
With this in mind, it's no wonder so many people choose organic herbs. You don't want to apply an herbal oil to your skin if there is a possibility the herbs were treated with dangerous chemicals. You don't want to drink herbal tea using herbs that were treated with dangerous chemicals, either. While you probably won't drop dead on the spot it is akin to drinking poison. Therefore, you should consider buying only organic herbs. With organic herbs you can be absolutely sure there were no harmful chemicals used on the herbs during growth or processing.
If you are an herb farmer you should seriously consider switching to organic farming methods. These methods may include crop rotation, natural pesticides, the use of compost as fertilizer, and even the utilization of ladybugs in the garden. If you are unfamiliar with organic growing practices there is a wealth of information on the Internet that can help you. In addition, you will find lots of books at the library and/or bookstore devoted to growing herbs organically. Here are some recommended titles: Burpee: The Complete Vegetable & Herb Gardener : A Guide to Growing Your Garden Organically by Karan Davis Cutler, Barbara W. Ellis and David Cavagnaro, and Herbs: Organic Gardening Basics by the Editors of Organic Gardening Magazine.
Organic herb farming is growing in popularity with farmers and consumers everywhere. Whether you have a small farm or a large one, using organic techniques can benefit your farm in many ways. When you use organic agriculture methods you can feel good that you are helping the environment and your consumers.
